Vietnam Poultry Industry Market Research

The poultry industry is very fragmented. Approximately 65% of households produce less than 200 birds annually. Small farms have resulted in poor biosecurity and frequent disease challenges

Traditional extensive household poultry production is by far the most common production system in the country, where poultry is raised in backyards, gardens, and often free to range on neighboring land.

Red River Delta, Northern Midland, Mountain and North central area regions have the highest population of poultry in Vietnam. The Red River Delta region, the largest poultry producing region, accounts for 26% of total poultry production in Vietnam

Vietnam is a market for fresh chicken (85%). Vietnamese prefer to purchase poultry products in wet market. Poultry meat consumption was 789,000 tonne in 2013

The transition of part of Viet Nam’s poultry sector to larger scale industrial production is inevitable. Among other considerations, the following factors will influence the viability of smaller producers to cope with a changing domestic poultry industry:

1.    Current government policies do not encourage traditional extensive poultry raising.  These policies are based on assumptions of substandard efficiency and biosecurity.

2.  The proportion of poultry products coming from commercial farms has increased rapidly in recent years, including intermediate supplies of poultry meat, eggs, chicks, and breeding stock.

3.  Wider application of certification and traceability standards will improve product quality and market-determined prices
