Australian Aquaculture Set to Double in Value

03 Oct 2017 Source: Minister of Agriculture, Australia

3 Oct - Australia's aquaculture industries are set to double their value to $2 billion following today's launch of the Federal Government's National Aquaculture Strategy at the Seafood Directions 2017 conference in Sydney.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Anne Ruston said the strategy outlined a sustainable pathway to industry growth in response to increasing demand for safe, clean and green Australian seafood.

"World seafood demand is continuing to grow and with wild-catch fishery production plateauing, we need the aquaculture industry to fill the gap," Minister Ruston said.

"Australia's aquaculture industry has an enviable reputation for producing high quality and sustainably sourced seafood.

"This strategy has identified priority areas for the Australian, state and territory governments and industry to parlay the aquaculture's reputation for quality into future growth with the aim of doubling the value of the industry by 2027.

"Australian aquaculture is well placed to take advantage of growing world demand with an abundance of space, clean water, a stable investment environment and high quality education and training.

"We want to empower industry to harness the opportunities of increasing world seafood demand, and to support our commitment to develop a more competitive and sustainable aquaculture sector.

"Through this strategy we will create more jobs and more high quality seafood for home consumption and for export to help feed a growing global population.

"The strategy has been developed in consultation with key aquaculture industry representatives and members of state and the Northern Territory governments."

Political advisors offer suggestions to China's grain pricing reform

DATE:2017-11-17       SOURCE:Xinhua News Agency

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors met Thursday to discuss ways to reform the country's grain pricing system.

The bi-weekly consultation session was chaired by Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Political advisors said grain security is an issue of strategic importance. China has achieved steady growth in grain production in recent years and its food security has been effectively safeguarded.

However, the current grain pricing and storage policies must be improved to address many problems, such as weakened role of the market, a large inventory build-up and high fiscal burdens.

The advisors put forward proposals including measures to reform the country's minimum procurement price system by making it more flexible and letting the market play a more decisive role in the pricing of grain.

Measures should also be taken to improve ways to subsidize the grain growers in order to prevent a drop in their income, they suggested, while saying reforms should also be conducted on grain procurement and storage enterprises.

The consultation sessions are used by political advisors to study major issues with experts and officials.
